HELPFUL HINTS FOR SCALE BUYERS

For a Scale to be Certified or Legal-for-Trade, it must have an NTEP Certificate of Conformance number displayed on its serial plate. Additionally, all related product documentation, including brochures and instruction manuals, must feature the NTEP logo, which appears as follows:

Split Weighing refers to weighing each axle separately and adding the axle weights together for the total vehicle weight. This method is not Legal-for-Trade. Purchasing an Axle Scale instead of a full-length Truck Scale does not provide a Legal-for-Trade Truck Scale.

When purchasing a Scale from an online retailer, it must be calibrated and certified by a licensed Scale service provider and registered with the state’s Weights and Measures department before it can be used for commercial trade.

To ensure accuracy, verify calibration with a known weight or contact a licensed Scale service provider with certified weights for proper calibration before placing the Scale into service.
